Before fitting a new engine, you might as well do the maintenence tasks to save time later... especially with T
engines and their notoriously shocking placement for oil filters.
Just remember this one thing... There will always be something that you are not prepared for. ... normally
2,3, a dozen things... but this will always push out the 'estimated' time taken to 2 or 3 times what was thought.
Maintence tasks I did:
- Oil Filter -> Pretty straight forward, just swapped with new Repco Item.
- Front Water Housing/Pump -> On RWD 4AGE's there's a bypass pipe that goes from the top water housing down
to the water pump. I went to remove this and give it to my friend. However, there are a few notoriously bad bolts
on old 4AGE's.
The whole top housing broke where the bypass pipe comes in and I snapped one of the bolts holding this to the
head. And the bypass pipe had corroded into the water pump housing. So much for giving the bypass pipe to my
friend :(
So, I pulled off the water pump and RWD lines and fitted a modified FWD water line setup by Nite Parts, which is
much neater IMHO. Matt managed to get the bolt out eventually with the help of some Vice Grips and CRC!!..
So when we fitted the new housing, we also replaced the the bolts with some off a bellhousing I think. New paper
gaskets were made (again Matt = gasket Yoda), and gooed up and put on.
- Intake Manifold Leak -> This actually happened after the engine was running. But it potentially would pay
to take this off, and redo the gaskets on the TVIS->head side, and intake->TVIS side. Check TVIs butterflies are
swivelling properly, remove TVIS if necessary (will require shorter bolts).
- Engine Mounts -> Hardly maintenence, but I was missing one of the plates on the supplied Carina mounts,
so I had to take a bit off the old 4A mounts and file/grind the necessary places to make it fit.
- Clutch -> We changed the thrust bearing on the gearbox while it was off, and even then, it was pressed on
incorrectly so I ended up getting another one and putting it on. Probably pays to check clutch as well here. I
couldn't be bothered by this stage. ;)
- Check -> Check again to make sure you have everything you need. Don't think you're all sorted yet though!
